Whereas God turns from his anger over Nineveh in response to their repentance, Jonah becomes angry over it. Thus, God and Jonah come at Nineveh differently, and keep moving in opposite directions.
Having been told by YHWH to go to Nineveh, it’s clear enough that the reason Jonah ran toward Tarshish was to escape YHWH’s presence. But the real question is: Why does he wish to flee from YHWH?
The title “Obadiah” is a reduced form of the heading found in the opening line, “The vision of Obadiah.” This longer title supplies the reader with a twofold orientation to the material that follows.
